Quadcopters are small, sophisticated rotorcraft that are used by the military as drones, commercially for a wide array of purposes, and by individuals as both toys and enthusiast-caliber models and controllable flying vehicles. For the beginner, retail quadcopters can be a perplexing topic, and this guide provides some clarity to new hobbyists and those considering a quadcopter purchase as a gift.
About Quadcopters
Quadcopters, also called quadrotors and quadrotor helicopters, differ from traditional helicopters by having four rather than two rotors. The four quadcopter rotors are generally equidistant from each other and are used to generate thrust and control pitch. The first quadcopters were invented in the 1920s, but it's only recently that the technology has been refined enough to allow for consumer-level products. Retail quadcopters are available in both ready-to-fly (RTF) and kit-based packages, and they come as remote control (RC) or control line vehicles.
RTF Quadcopter
The main advantage of RTF quadcopters is that they're sold nearly ready for flight and require only minor preparation, such as rotor attachment, battery placement, and control calibration. RTF options are particularly popular for new and young enthusiasts because they usually require less commitment of finances and time. Lightweight, relatively inexpensive RTF models are an excellent option for beginners because quadcopters can be difficult to control and easy to break.
Quadcopter Kits
Quadcopter kits range from blueprints to ready to assemble (RTA) kits. With a blueprint, the hobbyist must acquire or make all of the necessary components. An RTA quadcopter provides all or nearly all components, which the hobbyist then has to put together. Kits are a popular option among experienced enthusiasts because they allow for far more intricate customization and personalization. A great deal of effort often goes into creating a unique design.
