RTF vs. Kit
As a rule of thumb, beginners should purchase an RTF model as a first quadcopter. It should be lightweight and mostly plastic, which is easier to control and far more resilient. A kit-based quadcopter generally requires the hobbyist to have a variety of specialized tools and supplies and is thus only suitable to the person who'll be involved in the hobby regularly and for the long term.
Radio Control Quadcopters
An RC quadcopter has a radio receiver on board, and the hobbyist uses a handheld radio transmitter. The main advantage of an RC quadcopter is that the vehicle's range is only limited by the power of the transmitter. However, it is also a real concern for inexperienced operators because it's possible to fly the vehicle out of range. When an RC car goes out of range, it simply comes to a stop, but when an RC quadcopter goes out of range, it eventually crashes to the ground.
Control Line Quadcopters
Control line, also called U-Control, quadcopters are connected to a control device via a pair of wires. One advantage to control line is that the vehicle can't fly out range, and another is that the lines allow for special acrobatics that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
RC vs. Control Line
RC quadcopters are more versatile and thus more common. Control line vehicles are generally only used in specific scenarios and deliver a very different experience. Control line quadcopters are not suitable for flight in groups so are often not permitted at flight fields.
Quadcopter Camera
An allure that an RC quadcopter has over an RC airplane or helicopter is that it can support a camera via a camera mount. FPV quadcopters are set up to provide a first-person view and, in some cases, provide a feed to a display on the transmitter. Due to popularity of GoPro cameras, there are also GoPro-specific quadcopters available.
